Tampa 2 out of the 3-3-5 Penny 3 High set drops both deep safeties to the numbers while the Mike backer sinks into the deep middle hole, creating the classic three-deep look with two low hook/curl defenders underneath. The diagram shows both outside corners bailing to flat zones, the two inside linebackers dropping into hook/curl windows, and the Mike carding vertically to rob any post or seam route trying to split the safeties. This is a zone coverage defensive play designed to take away deep middle throws and vertical seam concepts, forcing the offense to check down or throw underneath into the flats and hooks where defenders are sitting.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are showing deep halves before rotating back to the numbers, the offense may not diagnose Tampa 2 until the ball is out, so bait the quarterback into throwing the deep middle. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's drop, if he gets good depth and width he can rob posts, deep crossers, and seam routes that usually gash single high or true Cover 2 shells. This coverage is vulnerable to comebacks, corner routes, and sideline throws behind the corners since they bail early to protect the deep half, so watch for double moves attacking that space right after the corner commits vertically. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers up the middle can pull the Mike out of his deep drop, so if you see the offense hot route a seam or post against a blitz look, expect them to test the vacated middle hole. Identify trips or bunch formations presnap since they can overload one flat defender, forcing a tough choice between staying deep or squeezing the underneath throw, so user that flat defender aggressively against three-receiver stacks.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect play-action shots or seam routes over the middle, since the Mike's deep drop erases that window. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is aligned with two verticals or a deep post concept and be ready to see the QB hold the ball as the Mike carries the seam. User the Mike linebacker after the snap to rob any in-breaking route or spy the deep middle if you see trips or bunch formations stacking one side. Combine this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Drop from the same set to disguise your shell presnap and keep the quarterback guessing between three deep safeties and true two deep. Watch out for flat routes and quick outs since the corners have to sink deep, leaving underneath flat throws available if you do not user a flat defender aggressively. Mix in Edge Blitz 2 or Mike Bltiz 0 on similar downs to keep the offense honest against your zone drops.
