Breakdown

Mike Sim 2 is a simulated pressure call out of the 3-3-5 Penny 3 High set that shows Cover 2 zone shell behind a Mike blitz look. The diagram shows both outside linebackers dropping vertically into deep half zones while three interior defenders show blitz with red arrows before the Mike and a rush defender crash the middle, and the two flanking nickel/corner defenders sit short in curl or flat zones. This is a zone based simulated pressure designed to disguise the rush and confuse quarterback progressions, with the primary read being the interior pressure package getting home while the two deep defenders bracket anything over the top.

Defensive Reads

Watch for offenses attacking the middle of the field with drag routes or crossers since the interior blitz can leave a momentary void before underneath defenders settle. Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties show deep half alignment the quarterback may expect Cover 2 and try to throw the deep out or corner route, which the two deep defenders are built to bracket. Post-snap, key the offensive line's protection slide, if they slide toward the Mike blitz the backside rusher usually gets a clean lane. This beats quick game and man beater concepts that rely on the quarterback having time, but it can be exploited by hot routes or screens that attack the vacated interior gap immediately after snap. Man-beater double moves or comeback routes against the flanking zone defenders can work if the receiver recognizes the shallow zone drop before the ball is out.

Usage Tips

Disguise this call by showing base Cover 2 alignment pre-snap and delay the blitz indicator until after the play clock is running to keep quarterbacks guessing.

Use this on early downs or 2nd and medium when offenses expect base coverage, since the simulated pressure package punishes hesitation in the pocket.

Mix Mike Sim 2 with Tampa 2 and Cover 2 Roll from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on defensive backfield leverage before the snap.

User the Mike linebacker to time the delayed blitz manually, then spy the running lane if the quarterback tries to escape up the middle.

Call this against shotgun spread formations with three or more wide receivers, since the extra underneath defenders can match slot routes while deep defenders protect against verticals.
