Breakdown

Blast Rt is a downhill power run out of the Wildcat Trips Over formation, with the direct snap ball carrier lined up in the backfield behind the arrow showing an iso run to the right side of the line. The blocking scheme pulls the play side linemen to seal the point of attack while the fullback or lead blocker isolates on the first threat in the alley. This is a pure run play designed to attack gap integrity, not a man or zone beater since there are no route concepts on the diagram, and the primary read is the ball carrier reading the down blocks and following the lead blocker through the hole before bouncing outside if the alley is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense has stacked the box in a run-heavy front, since Blast Rt loses efficiency against gap-sound fronts with extra defenders inside. Look for safety rotation toward the trips side, a safety cheating down into the box pre-snap signals they expect the direct snap run and will fill the alley quickly. Post-snap, watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill, if they read the mesh point instantly they can blow up the play before the lead blocker seals the edge. This run is vulnerable to inside blitzes and A-gap pressure since the Wildcat alignment gives away run intent, so defenses stacking the interior gaps will shut this down. It beats light boxes and defenses in nickel or dime personnel that are geared up to stop the pass, since those fronts lack the extra body needed to fill every gap on the play side.

Usage Tips

Use Blast Rt on early downs when you need a manageable gain to stay ahead of the sticks since Wildcat direct snap runs thrive in unpredictable down and distance spots.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to Jet Sweep or Counter from this same set to keep them honest.

Since the Wildcat alignment removes a traditional quarterback threat, defenses often sell out to stop the run, so mix in PA Jet Cross or PA Jet Sweep to punish overaggressive linebackers keying the mesh point.

User the fullback or lead blocker manually if you are confident reading the second level, this lets you control the key block on a linebacker filling the alley.

Run this on early series downs to establish tendencies, then call Power later in the set once defenders start flowing hard to the play side.
