Toss Weak out of the Weak I H Wing formation is a pure run play that tosses the ball to the halfback attacking the weak side edge. The H Wing tight end and weak side wing personnel seal the edge while the fullback leads through the hole, creating a stretch-and-bounce blocking scheme designed to get the ball carrier outside the tackle box before the defense can flow. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it wins based on leverage and defensive flow, with the primary read being the fullback's lead block and the edge defender's shed angle to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up inside.
Toss Weak beats defenses that overcommit their linebackers to the inside gaps or bite hard on play action, since the edge blockers can get a clean release before the second level arrives. Watch for a hard crashing defensive end or outside linebacker on the weak side, if he is squeezing the edge on snap the ball carrier needs to cut inside off the fullback's block instead of bouncing. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a Sam or Will position can blow this play up if they read toss action quickly, so identify pre-snap alignment depth to gauge run fit discipline. Stacked fronts with an extra man in the box or a run-blitz call from the defense will beat this play at the mesh point before the toss develops, so be ready to check to a passing concept if you see八 in the box. Zone shells with safeties rotating late can still fill quickly against toss action, so look for a safety cheating down pre-snap as a sign the edge is already accounted for.
Use Toss Weak against defensive fronts that show heavy interior alignment or stacked boxes with linebackers sitting tight, since the play is designed to get outside before flow arrives.
Check the weak side edge defender pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on run tendencies this toss can catch him overextended and create an easy cutback lane.
Pair this with HB Stretch and Strong Stretch in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing on run direction, since all three ask the defense to defend the perimeter differently.
Sequence Toss Weak early in a series to bait aggressive user linebackers into flowing hard, then hit PA Boot Lt or PA Boot off the same look once they start overpursuing.
Best used on early downs or short yardage situations where you have numbers advantage on the edge, avoid calling it into unblocked edge pressure looks since the toss has a slower developing mesh point.
