Breakdown

HB Gut is a downhill run play out of the Weak I H Wing formation with 22 personnel, designed to attack the interior gaps with a gut blocking scheme. The fullback and guard pull to seal the point of attack while the offensive line down blocks to create a natural running lane for the halfback, who takes the handoff and reads the gut block for his crease. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the hole, read the fullback's block, and decide between the A-gap or B-gap cutback based on how the defense flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth. If linebackers are stacked tight to the line, they are keying run and will fill the gut lane fast. Watch for a Mike linebacker cheating toward the strong side. Weak I formations can bait defenses into overloading the strength, leaving the backside gut lane vulnerable. User the play-side linebacker or Mike to spy the pulling fullback. If you flow with the puller immediately, you shut down the gut concept before the crease forms. Against this run, a defensive tackle who stays square and does not get moved off the ball by the down block can blow up the play at the mesh point. Zone blitzes and gap exchange fronts disrupt HB Gut because the defensive line stunts into the gut lane before the pulling blocker can seal it, so look for a scheme that features a 3-technique crashing inside.

Usage Tips

Use HB Gut on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage to stay ahead of the chains without tipping your hand.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a play like Toss Weak to bounce outside instead of forcing it inside.

Pair HB Gut with PA Boot Lt or PA Boot from the same formation to keep linebackers honest, since the run action sells the play-action fake off identical initial footwork.

Against aggressive fronts that crash hard to stop dive concepts, hold the halfback stick and let the gut block develop before committing to a gap, since the natural cutback lane opens against overpursuit.

Mix HB Gut with HB Power O and HB Stretch out of the same set so linebackers cannot key run direction based on backfield action alone.
