HB Power O out of Weak I H Wing is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole while the fullback and H Wing seal the point of attack on the play side. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with the play side tackle and tight end (or wing) sealing the edge as the lead blocker climbs to the play side linebacker, and the HB takes a slight lead step before hitting the hole downhill off the double team. This is a pure run play with no pass options attached, designed to create a double team at the point of attack and let the puller clean up the first threat to the ball at the second level. Primary read progression is fullback or puller first, then vertical burst through the crease, with the backside cutback available if the front flows too hard.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is stacked tight behind the defensive line he is likely reading run fits and will fill quickly against the pull. Check for a heavy box count, if the defense has eight or more defenders inside the tackles this play will struggle without a lead blocker winning his block clean. Identify Mike linebacker blitzes and A gap pressure pre-snap since a delayed blitz through the play side gap can blow up the pulling guard before he reaches the second level. Man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 3 with aggressive corners crashing downhill, but it gets shut down by cover 2 or cover 4 shells that keep safeties square and allow linebackers to sit and read the mesh point. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any user controlled defender crashing down the line, since a disciplined edge that stays home can force a negative play if the cutback lane is not there.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a shift to identify if the defense is playing an odd or even front before the snap so you know which gap the puller can actually access.
Attack base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts on early downs when linebackers are stacked at normal depth and have not yet cheated toward the strength of the formation.
Hot route the backside receiver on a quick slant or drag if you expect man coverage so you have a answer if the defense loads the box against the run.
Pair this with PA Power O and PA Boot from the same set so linebackers who key on the pulling guard get punished by play action once they start flowing hard.
Save this play for early down and manageable distance, third and short, or goal line situations where you want to force the defense to declare their gap fits before the snap.
