PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of Weak I with 22 personnel that sells the strong side run fake before the quarterback boots left, away from the flow of the fake, to attack an outnumbered edge. The blocking scheme mimics the HB Power O look to freeze linebackers and pull safeties toward the box, then releases the H Wing and tight end into a flood concept on the boot side while the fullback often stays in as a chip or extra blocker. The primary read progression starts with the flat or drag route from the H Wing as the shortest, quickest throw, then climbs to the intermediate crosser or corner route breaking to the boot side, with the backside dig or deep comeback as the last resort if the pocket holds up.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing a single high safety look, that alignment usually means man or Cover 3 underneath and favors the flood concept on the boot side. Watch the strong side linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard to defend the play action run fake, the flat and drag routes will be wide open behind him. Beware of a defense that stays disciplined with contain on the boot side edge, a spy or a defensive end staying home can collapse the pocket and force an early checkdown. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with deep safeties sitting on the corner route will take away the deep boot side option, so be ready to work the underneath flat route instead. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone on the boot side are the biggest threat to this concept, since a jumped flat or drag route can turn into a pick six off the rollout throw.
Usage Tips
Run this early in a series after establishing HB Power O or HB Gut so the linebackers bite on the run fake and vacate the boot side flat and intermediate zones.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the play action fake will not fully manipulate the box, so lean on the quick flat throw instead of forcing the deeper boot side route.
Use the rollout to your advantage on second and short or first and ten, since defenses are more likely to trigger run support and open passing lanes on the edge you are booting toward.
Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag if you are facing man coverage, this gives you a built in man beater against linebackers who cannot stay in phase on the rollout.
Pair this play with PA Boot to the opposite direction later in the series so the defense cannot key on which side the quarterback will roll based on formation alone.
