X Slant out of Weak I H Wing (22 personnel) is a quick-hitting man beater built around three routes. The X receiver runs a sharp slant across the middle, the H Wing releases from the backfield area on a vertical seam/go route up the numbers, and the flanker on the opposite side runs a deep fly to clear space and hold the corner. It is a pure dropback pass with no blocking tag shown for the fullback, meaning the offensive line and backfield are responsible for protection while the QB works a quick primary read to the X slant with the seam route as a built-in answer versus off coverage.
Defensive Reads
Press man corners with no safety help over the slot are the biggest key that the X slant will win immediately, so user your slot defender and undercut the route rather than trailing. Watch linebacker depth before the snap: shallow, aggressive backers signal blitz or run support and open a bigger throwing window for the slant, so drop a spy or hook defender to close it. In zone coverage, sit a linebacker or nickel defender in the intermediate hook zone to take away both the slant and the seam route from the H Wing simultaneously. Disguise cover 2 or cover 4 shells presnap so the QB cannot immediately identify the seam window against the deep half safety. If the offense shows this personnel and formation frequently, key on the H Wing release: a vertical stem instead of a stalk block signals pass, allowing you to jump the underneath route with a lurking linebacker.
Usage Tips
Prioritize this play on 3rd and short to medium since the X slant is designed to win quickly against man coverage before pressure arrives.
Check the slot or nickel defender over the X receiver pre-snap: if he is playing inside leverage in man, hot route the X to a quick out instead to avoid a jump route interception.
Use the H Wing seam route as your answer versus zone coverage, especially cover 3 or cover 4 shells where the flat defender bails and opens a throwing lane up the hash.
Pair this play in sequence with HB Stretch and HB Power O from the same H Wing set so the defense has to respect run action, which slows linebacker reaction to the slant window.
Motion the H Wing pre-snap if your playbook allows it to identify man versus zone before the snap, giving you a clean presnap key on whether to work the slant or bail to the seam.
