Breakdown

X-Corner out of Strong I Y Open Flex is a play-action boot concept built around a deep corner route from the X receiver, with a shallow crosser underneath and a checkdown option coming out of the backfield. The TE and flanker work an in and out combo on the left side to clear space and hold underneath defenders, while the fullback releases on a vertical seam read from the backfield behind the line. The QB executes a play-action fake before rolling to the right, reading the flanker drag first, then working to the X-Corner as the deep shot against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for single high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the corner route has room to work against a cornerback without deep help. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake and flow toward the line, the underneath crosser and flanker combo will have wide open grass in the middle of the field. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flying toward the boot side flat, since that lurk threat can jump the shallow crosser and bait a bad throw. Two high safety shells with the corner rotating over the top shut this down hardest, so if you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 pre-snap, expect the corner route to be contested and look to the checkdown instead. Man coverage across the board with no safety help is the green light, roll the pocket with the QB and trust the X receiver to win one-on-one on the corner break.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when you have already established the run game with HB Dive or Inside Zone from this same formation to sell the play-action fake.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the cornerback over the X receiver, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, the corner route wins immediately on the boot.

Hot route the backside underneath receiver into a quick out or hitch if you see zone drops flowing hard to the boot side, since that gives you a fast dump-off against Cover 3 sky rotations.

Pair this call with PA Shot or Deep Cross earlier in a series to get the defense biting on the run fake, then hit X-Corner as the explosive shot play once linebackers start creeping up.

Avoid calling this on third and long against disciplined zone defenses, since the boot action loses value when the defense stays home in coverage instead of respecting the run fake.
