Breakdown

HB Draw out of Strong I Y Open Flex shows three vertical clear-out routes from the outside receivers and slot while the HB delays behind a pass-blocking-look offensive line before taking the handoff up the middle. The line sells pass protection for a beat to freeze the front seven, then transitions to run blocking as the RB presses the hole. This is a pure run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush and blitz-heavy defenses, with the primary read being the interior gap that opens between the guards based on linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker depth before the snap, if he is stacked tight to the line he is likely reading run and will blow this play up quickly. Watch for a defensive lineman crashing hard upfield off the snap, aggressive one-gap penetration is the biggest killer of HB Draw since it disrupts the delayed timing. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with both safeties showing deep pre-snap, this tells you the second level is thin and the draw has room to hit. If the user controls a linebacker and sits in the A or B gap rather than dropping into coverage, abandon the draw concept and check to a pass play. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers upfield immediately, since the delayed blocking scheme cannot handle unblocked defenders arriving before the RB reaches the line of scrimmage.

Usage Tips

Call this on passing downs like 2nd and long or 3rd and medium when the defense is likely to bring pressure or drop into deep zone shells expecting a pass. Watch for defenses showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties bailing deep at the snap, since that vacates the middle of the field for the draw to hit. Use the three vertical routes as window dressing, do not hot route them since their job is to occupy corners and safeties even though the ball is never going their way. Pair this with PA Slide or PA Shot earlier in a drive so the defense respects both the run action and the play-action rollout threat, making them hesitate on run/pass keys. Avoid calling HB Draw against defenses that are sitting in short zone or showing linebacker spy alignment, since those defenders will read the delayed handoff immediately.
