Breakdown

HB Mtn Toss is a pitch run out of Strong I with a mountain (jet or fullback flip) motion added pre-snap to shift the defensive numbers before the toss hits the edge. The blocking scheme is a standard toss sweep design where the fullback and playside tackle/tight end pull to lead block and kick out the first defender off the edge, letting the HB stretch to the sideline and read the alley defender. The primary read progression is: identify the motion adjustment defender first, then key the fullback's lead block to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up through the alley created by the pulling linemen.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safety alignment before the snap, if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell the box is lighter and the toss has room to the edge. Track the linebacker flow after the motion, if a linebacker chases the motion man across the formation it signals man coverage and confirms an outnumbered box for the toss. Key the defensive end and outside linebacker on the playside edge, if they crash hard upfield the fullback kick block can seal them for an easy bounce outside. Beware of a defense showing run blitz with the strong safety or slot corner creeping into the box pre-snap, this alignment is designed to blow up toss plays before the fullback can get a clean angle. If the user controls the playside linebacker and sits at the point of attack reading the pull, expect them to shoot the gap and blow up the play at the mesh point, so be ready to check to a play-action counter like PA WR In instead.

Usage Tips

Send the mountain motion across formation before the snap and freeze the play if the defense shows man coverage by rotating a linebacker or safety to follow the motion man, since that confirms man and opens up the edge.

Use this in short yardage and early down situations (1st and 10, 2nd and short) where you want to establish the edge run game and set up later playaction shots like PA Shot or PA Slide off the same look.

If the defense stacks the box with extra run defenders after seeing the motion, check to HB Draw or Inside Zone instead since the toss loses value against overloaded fronts.

User the fullback lead blocker manually if you trust your blocking angles, this lets you manually seal the edge defender rather than relying on CPU logic which can whiff against aggressive user linebackers.

Pair this play in a sequence with Mtn Zone Weak to keep defenders guessing on motion direction, forcing them to respect both the strong side toss and the weak side zone run from the identical presnap look.
