Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of Strong I with 21 personnel, showing the fullback and offensive line flowing laterally to establish a zone blocking wall while the HB reads the cutback lane. The diagram shows the HB (red) attacking downhill and cutting off the FB lead block, with the offensive line sliding in unison toward the play side to create movement and seal gaps for a one cut, north-south run. This is a run play designed to beat gap heavy fronts and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read progression starting on the play side A gap, then bending to the B gap, and finally cutting back if backside pursuit overflows.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the middle linebacker depth and alignment, since a linebacker sitting tight in the box signals a run blitz that can beat this play if timed correctly with a well placed user blitz. Watch for safety rotation into the box before the snap, as an eight man front or a safety cheating down will clog both the A and B gap lanes this play is designed to hit. Post-snap, defensive linemen who shoot gaps rather than reading blocks can blow up the zone scheme, so a controlled defensive tackle attacking the play side A gap is one of the most effective user reads against this concept. This run struggles against odd fronts like a 3-4 Solid with two off ball linebackers reading downhill quickly, since the extra hat in the box eliminates the cutback lane. If the offense runs this from Strong I repeatedly, sit a linebacker in the play side B gap or user the middle linebacker to crash down hard once the fullback declares his path, since that removes the natural cutback option.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to identify if the defense is showing a stacked box, since Inside Zone Split thrives against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Bounce this play in your call sheet with HB Dive and HB Mtn Toss to keep linebackers guessing on run direction, since all three plays share similar initial line movement but attack different lanes.
If the defense shows a 4-3 Under or heavy blitz look pre-snap, consider hot routing the FB to chip before releasing or audibling to a play-action shot off this same look to punish overcommitted linebackers.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains, and pairs well with PA Slide or PA WR In later in a series once the defense starts keying run.
Manually control the HB post handoff to make the correct cut based on flow, since the CPU blocking logic will sometimes misread which gap is truly open against slanting fronts.
