Zone WK (1) out of Strong I H Tight Close is a weak side inside zone run that sends the offensive line flowing toward the weak side while the fullback and H back seal the edge. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, built to attack gaps created by zone blocking rather than a designated man or zone beater in the passing sense. The primary read progression for the ball carrier starts at the weak side A gap, bounces to the B gap if the frontside is clogged, and can bend backside if the defense overpursues.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if both backers are stacked tight to the line expecting run, look to counter with PA Slide out of the same formation on the next call. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 under or over front, a shaded weak side front with an extra defender in the box can blow up this zone run before it develops. Key the safety rotation post snap, if the strong safety crashes down immediately it signals run support and you should be ready to cut the play back away from pursuit. Look for edge defenders squeezing hard down the line, aggressive edge crash calls or contain blitzes off the weak side can string this play out and kill the cutback lane. If the defense shows a nano blitz look with a defensive lineman shooting the backside A gap pre snap, hot route the fullback to check block that gap or bail into a quick pass concept instead.
Run this early in a series to establish tendency data and set up PA Power O and PA Slide later off the same Strong I look.
Check the defensive front pre snap, if the weak side has a light box with only two or three defenders inside the tackles this play hits hard.
Use manual control on your fullback or H back lead blocker to seal the first defender outside the tackle box rather than trusting the CPU logic on tougher difficulty settings.
Pair this with Counter Weak and Power O in the same set so linebackers cannot sit on one gap or flow direction, forcing hesitation that opens the zone cutback lane.
Best called on early downs, first and second and short to medium, since it sets up run/pass balance and keeps the defense honest against Stutter Go's and Y Trail later in the series.
