Counter Weak (1) out of Strong I H Tight Close is a power run play designed to attack the weak side of the formation with a pulling guard and fullback lead. The offensive line sells strong side flow before the counter action redirects the HB back weak, using the pulling blockers to kick out the edge defender and seal the alley for the running back. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial hole, read the kickout block on the edge defender, then find the cutback lane behind the pulling guard.
Watch for linebackers stacked tight to the box, this counter action is built to exploit downhill linebackers who overpursue the initial strong side flow. Look for a weak side defensive end or outside linebacker who stays home instead of chasing flow, this is the key defender who can blow up the counter before the guard gets a clean kickout. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 under front, these alignments often leave the weak side edge vulnerable to the pulling guard's kickout block. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flying downhill from the second level, a disciplined user linebacker who stays patient can fill the cutback lane and stuff this run for a loss. Beware of run blitzes sent from the weak side A or B gap, these can beat the pulling linemen to the point of attack and disrupt the timing of the counter before it develops.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing hard toward the strong side before the counter hits weak.
Check the defensive line alignment before the snap, this play thrives against defenses that are slanting or crashing toward the strong side.
Pair this with HB Misdirection and Power O from the same set to keep second level defenders guessing on flow direction and force hesitation.
Best called on early downs (first and ten or second and medium) when defenses are more likely to sit in base run fronts rather than nickel or dime packages.
User the fullback or pulling guard manually if you have confidence reading blocks, this lets you control the kickout and seal at the second level for a bigger gain.
