Breakdown

PA Power O out of Strong I H Tight Close sells the Power O run action to the strong side before the QB pulls and rolls into a play-action passing concept. Off the fake, the play sends a deep crosser working from the backside all the way across the field, a vertical seam route straight up the middle of the field, and a corner route breaking outside from the same stem, while the fullback releases into a short flat route as the checkdown or man beater against man coverage leverage. The primary read progression starts with the vertical seam to hold the safety, then works to the corner route for a coverage-beating window against zone shells, and finally checks down to the flat route if both are covered, making this a play-action shot play that stresses both man and zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth and flow at the snap, since aggressive run fits and linebackers crashing downhill on the fake indicate they are vulnerable to the seam and corner routes behind them. Check safety alignment before the snap, because a single high safety rotating down to help in the run fit leaves the deep middle and corner exposed to the vertical seam route. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in a lurk or hook zone in the middle of the field, since they can undercut the deep crosser if the QB does not manipulate them with eye discipline. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten badly by the corner route breaking outside, so look for man leverage on the outside cornerback pre-snap. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep can shut down the seam and corner combo, forcing the QB to rely on the flat route or checkdown to the fullback against a sound zone drop.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake completely by holding the play-action animation instead of rushing the throw, since defenders keying run flow will bite hard on early down looks.

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to load the box and bite on the run action.

Pre-snap, identify if the safety is sitting at depth in a two high shell or crashing down into the box, since a single high safety or crashed safety opens up the vertical seam and corner combo.

Hot route the flat route from the fullback into a quick out or flat if you see the defense showing blitz, giving the QB an immediate answer against pressure.

Pair this play with Power O and Counter Weak in your play-calling sequence so the defense respects the run first, then hit them with this shot play once they start crashing linebackers and safeties downhill.
