Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard with the fake action, since a user Mike linebacker who bites on the misdirection leaves the backside wide open. Check safety depth and alignment pre-snap: an eight man box with both safeties crashed down signals the defense expects run and may overcommit to the initial flow direction. Blitz packages that send extra defenders to the play side actually help the cutback since it removes bodies from the backside cutback lane.
Usage Tips
Use this play against defenses that show aggressive linebacker flow or overpursuit tendencies on early down run stops since misdirection punishes downhill triggers. Save it for second and short or first and ten situations where the defense is more likely to sell out against a straight run read.
