Stutter Go's (1) out of Strong I H Tight Close is a vertical shot play built around double stutter go routes from the outside receivers, designed to freeze zone defenders and beat man corners on double moves. The tight end and H back work underneath as shorter outlets, giving you a checkdown against aggressive blitz looks while the outside stutter go routes clear out the top of the coverage. This is a man beater first and foremost, exploiting corners who bite on the stutter step, but it also stresses two high safety shells if the safeties key on the underneath routes. Primary read progression starts outside with the stutter go on the boundary corner, then works to the underneath tight end or H back checkdown if the shot play is not there.
Identify if the corners are in press man or off man pre-snap, since press man with no safety help is the ideal matchup for the stutter go double move. Check safety depth and shell alignment, because a single high safety rotating hard to one side leaves the opposite stutter go isolated on the corner. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink into deep zone drops instead of blitzing the underneath tight end and H back routes will be covered and you should reset to the next play in the sequence. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, since these shut down the deep stutter go and force you to live on the underneath checkdowns. Key any user controlled defender flying to the flat or jumping the stutter step early, since that signals a lurk read and you should hit the opposite side route or the checkdown immediately.
Look for single high safety or man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight with inside shade before committing to the deep shot.
Use motion or a hard count to force the defense to show blitz or coverage rotation, then trust the stutter go if the corner is playing off man without safety help over the top.
Hot route the underneath tight end into a quick out or drag if you diagnose a Cover 2 shell, since the stutter go loses value against a deep half safety who can play over the top.
Pair this play with Y Trail and PA Slide in the same set so defenders start respecting the intermediate crossing routes, which opens up the double move on the outside on later downs.
Best called on early downs or in shot situations like second and long, since the deep developing route takes time to hit and you need a clean pocket from the play action or drop back protection.
