Breakdown

Z Spot out of Pro Split Backs is a classic Cover 3 beater built around the spot concept on the play side. The Z runs a quick settle route into the flat area (shown as the short hook/spot route working back toward the sideline flat), the outside receiver on that side runs a corner route to clear the deep third, and the backside receiver runs a deep dig up the seam while the other outside receiver pushes vertical to hold the far corner. The primary read starts with the spot route underneath, then works to the corner route if the flat defender sits low, with the backside dig as the answer versus a hard rotate to the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Check the cornerback depth pre-snap, if he is playing off and deep it usually signals Cover 3 which is exactly what this concept is designed to beat. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks into the spot route immediately throw the corner route behind him for an explosive gain. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow hook zone, known as a lurk player, since he can jump the spot route if he reads it early. Man coverage with press alignment can bait a bad throw on the spot route, in that case progress quickly to the backside dig which naturally beats man leverage. Watch for a hard blitz off the edge, if the defense brings extra rushers the quick spot route becomes the checkdown that punishes pressure before it arrives.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the spot route gives a quick, high percentage completion versus zone drops.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 by checking the strength of the safeties, this play is designed to attack the hole in the zone that Cover 3 leaves in the flat.

If you see man coverage on the outside receivers, hot route the spot runner to a quick out or speed him up to create separation before the underneath defender can react.

Pair this play with Curl Flat or Spacing in your play calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between quick game concepts that all look similar at the snap.

Against teams that user the underneath zone defender aggressively, look to the corner route sooner since the flat defender will be sitting on the spot route.
