HB Draw out of the Split Backs Pro formation disguises itself as a dropback pass at the snap, with the offensive line showing pass protection before opening up run lanes as the running back delays and follows his blockers. The FB releases into a lead block or checks a blitzer, giving the interior line time to reach the second level against upfield rushers. This is a pure run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush tendencies and blitz-heavy defenses, with the primary read being the frontside gap first and the backside cutback lane second if the defense flows hard.
Check the defensive line alignment pre-snap for wide 9 techniques or edge rushers cheating upfield, since that opens the frontside cutback lane immediately. Look at linebacker depth: if they are sitting back in pass drops rather than staying square to run fits, this play gains extra yards before contact. Beware defenses that stay disciplined with spy defenders or a linebacker reading the FB block, since those looks clog the draw before it develops. Blitz-heavy man coverage shells with man beaters up top often overcommit rushers upfield, making this an effective counter, but zone blitzes with delayed linebacker fills can blow this up at the mesh point. User-controlled defenders sitting in the box or crashing down the line pre-snap should make you check to a different run concept or bail to a quick pass.
Call this on early passing downs like 2nd and 7 or 3rd and medium when you have shown dropback passes on previous snaps to set up the freeze. Watch for defenders crashing off the edge or stunting inside, since HB Draw thrives against upfield pass rush and delayed blitzes. Use pre-snap motion sparingly here since heavy shifts can tip the run and let linebackers sit instead of flowing to rush lanes. Pair this play with Curl Flat or Double Comeback earlier in a series so the defense keys pass rush on early downs, then hit them with the draw once they start pinning their ears back. If the defensive front shows a wide 9 or heavy edge rush look pre-snap, this is your green light to call HB Draw.
