Breakdown

Spacing out of Pro Split Backs is a classic zone beater built on horizontal stretch routes at staggered depths. The diagram shows a receiver running a deep out from the backside, an inside slot man running a quick out settling underneath, the TE running a spot route into the flat, and a flanker pushing vertical before breaking into an out route to stretch the sideline. This concept fills the underneath zones from sideline to sideline, so the primary read progression starts with the flat/spot route, then works to the intermediate out, and finally the deep sideline out if a zone defender bites on the shorter routes.

Defensive Reads

Spacing exploits zone defenses that leave soft spots between the underneath linebacker level and the deep third or deep quarter shells. Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment, if corners are playing off with deep help, expect zone drops that create natural throwing lanes for the spot and out routes. Post-snap, watch for a user linebacker dropping into the shallow hook zone to jump the spot route, this is the biggest lurk threat against this concept. Man coverage with no zone match shuts this play down quickly since the routes are flat breaking with no separation tools built in. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can rattle the timing, so identify if the offensive line has a hot route or check release to protect against overload pressure.

Usage Tips

Use Spacing on third and short to medium situations where defenses sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4.

Read the underneath defenders before the snap, if you see a Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink, target the spot route in the void behind the linebackers.

Hot route the backside out to a hitch or curl against man coverage to give yourself a quicker layup throw.

Pair this play with Curl Flat or Z Spot from the same set so the defense sees similar route stems but different landmarks, this keeps zone defenders guessing on drop depth.

Avoid calling Spacing against heavy man pressure looks since the routes lack natural rub or pick action to separate from press corners.
