TE Sail F Flat out of Pro Split Backs stacks a vertical sail concept on the right with the TE running a corner route from the backfield-adjacent slot, a deep out breaking to the sideline underneath it, and the fullback releasing to the flat for the shortest option. On the backside, the split end runs a deep dig from outside in, while the halfback stays in for a check release or protection. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by stretching the deep half or deep third defender vertically with the corner route while the flat route occupies the underneath zone defender, and the primary read progression starts with the TE corner route, works down to the F flat route, then comes back to the backside dig if the defense rolls coverage away.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and width since two deep safeties invite the sail stretch on the corner route while a single high safety signals Cover 3 and a chance to hit the backside dig behind the underneath zone. Post-snap, key the flat defender's reaction to the fullback release since a defender who sits on the flat opens up the corner route over the top, while a defender who runs with the corner leaves the flat wide open. Watch for user-controlled safeties dropping into a deep half or lurking the sail route, since a smart user will rob the corner route and force you to check down to the flat or dig. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability against this play since the corner route will separate against most linebackers or slot corners in trail technique. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them get exposed quickly because the flat route and dig serve as built-in hot reads against pressure, so watch for extra rushers off the edge and get the ball out fast.
Usage Tips
Look for two deep safeties pre-snap since this play is designed to punish Cover 2 by putting the corner route on top of the flat defender in a natural sail stretch.
If the corner shows soft outside leverage or bails into a deep third, throw the flat route to the fullback quickly for a high-percentage completion before the underneath defender can react.
Use this on early downs or third and short since the flat route and dig give you multiple safety valves if the deep corner route is covered.
Hot route the backside split end's dig into a deeper post if you diagnose Cover 3 to attack the seam vacated by the deep third defender.
Pair this with Curl Flat or Quick Outs in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the deep sail stretch and the quick underneath game, keeping linebackers honest against nano blitzes.
