Breakdown

Quick Outs out of Pro Split Backs is a five man protection quick pass concept built around three out breaking routes and a shallow crosser. The X receiver and the outside slot both run hard out routes at different depths on the left, the TE releases to the right and breaks flat, and the near back releases underneath to the left for a shallow flat check down. This is a classic quick game man and zone beater designed to attack the flat and hook zones before the pass rush closes, and the primary read progression starts with the shorter out from the slot, works to the deeper X out breaking route, then comes back to the TE flat and finally the RB check down underneath.

Defensive Reads

Watch the corners at the snap, if they sink deep into their zone drops without jumping the out routes this play should hit clean for a quick completion. Key the flat defenders on the TE side, since a defender sitting in the flat can jump the TE route and blow up that read, forcing you back to the RB check down. Against Cover 3, the out routes settle into the natural void between the corner and the underneath zone defender, so throw with anticipation before the zone defender can flow over. If the defense shows press man at the line with no help over the top, expect the out routes to get jammed, look immediately to the RB releasing to the flat as your fastest answer. Beware of a linebacker or nickel blitz off the edge, since the five man protection can be exposed against overload blitzes, and a hot pre snap read to the check down is essential.

Usage Tips

Get this play out fast, it is a timing based quick game concept so let the ball go on rhythm rather than holding it in the pocket.

Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 2 or Cover 3, since the out routes sit down right in the flat zone voids created by those shells.

Against man coverage, hot route the TE flat route into a quick slant or speed out to create separation off the line instead of letting him sit and get jammed.

Use the RB check down as your answer versus press man or when the defense brings extra rushers, since he releases quickly and gives you a safety valve.

Pair this play with Slants or Hitches in your call sheet to keep the defense guessing between out breaking and in breaking quick concepts, then mix in HB Draw or HB Off Tackle to punish linebackers who sit too aggressively in underneath zones.
