PA Slide is a play-action pass out of Pro Split Backs 21 personnel that sells the run fake before releasing three routes into a stretch concept. The backside receiver runs a corner route up the sideline while the slot crosses on a deep dig that settles behind the linebackers, and the flat route from the backfield area occupies underneath defenders to hold the zone. This is primarily a zone beater, using the corner and dig combo to stretch the field vertically and horizontally while the flat route serves as a checkdown, with the primary read progression starting on the deep dig, then working to the corner, and finally the flat if the pocket collapses or the middle is jammed.

Defensive Reads

Identify the safety alignment before the snap, since two high safeties tend to sit back and allow the dig to work into the soft spot, while a single high safety can rob the deep corner route. Watch linebacker depth after the run fake, since linebackers who bite hard on the play-action open a wide throwing lane for the dig route over the middle. Key the flat defender, whether it is a corner sitting in a zone or a linebacker spying, because that defender determines whether the checkdown is available or if it gets jumped by a user controlled lurk defender. Cover 3 with a hard flat drop and a deep third corner tends to shut this down since it takes away both the flat and the corner route simultaneously. Man coverage with no safety help over the top exposes the corner route for a big play if the receiver wins the release against the cornerback.

Usage Tips

Use PA Slide on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, since the run fake carries more weight when defenses respect the ground game. Check pre-snap for two high safeties, since a shell that stays split invites the dig to settle into the vacated middle zone before the safeties can rotate over. If you see man coverage indicators like a safety cheating over the slot, hot route the flat to a quick out or speed out to beat man leverage instead of forcing the dig into a trailing defender. Pair this play with HB Off Tackle or Power O earlier in a series to sell the run fake harder, then come back to PA Slide once the linebackers start stepping up on run action. Against blitz-heavy defenses, get the ball out on rhythm to the flat or dig quickly since the play-action drop gives extra time for pressure to arrive.
