HB Slip Screen out of the Pro Split Backs formation shows the offensive line sliding in to sell pass protection before releasing to wall off defenders in front of the checkdown back, while three receivers push vertical or work outside to clear the underneath zones and hold linebackers deep. The lone deep in-line release from the slot and the two go routes to the boundary are designed purely as clear-out routes, dragging corners and safeties away from the middle of the field. This is a screen play built to beat aggressive man pressure and overzealous pass rushes, with the primary read being the HB leaking out of the backfield behind the developing wall of blockers as soon as the rush commits upfield.
Defensive Reads
Diagnose man coverage or blitz pre-snap by checking for press corners on the outside receivers and a heavy front with linebackers creeping toward the line. Post-snap, key the defensive ends and outside linebackers: if they crash hard upfield without contain discipline, the screen lane opens instantly. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a shallow zone, since a disciplined spy or lurking linebacker can jump the screen and blow it up for a loss. Zone coverages with linebackers reading the quarterback's eyes and squatting underneath tend to shut this down, especially cover 2 or cover 3 shells with disciplined zone drops. If the defense shows a delayed blitz or zone blitz package, the extra rusher can beat the blockers to the flat before the screen develops.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in obvious passing situations against defenses that show heavy blitz pressure or man coverage with press corners. Watch pre-snap for stacked boxes or overload blitz looks off the edge, since the delayed release from the line punishes defenders who crash hard upfield. Take control of a lead blocker at the snap if possible to manually seal the first defender who threatens the screen lane. Pair this with HB Off Tackle and Power O earlier in a drive so the defense keys run action, then hit them with this screen when they start selling out against the ground game. Sequence it after Slants or Quick Outs to condition linebackers to sit on short routes, making the delayed screen release even more effective.
