FL Drive out of Pro Split Backs (21 personnel) is a Drive concept built to attack Cover 4 shells. The flanker runs a deep vertical from the outside numbers, the inside receiver runs the classic drive route working from the backside across the field underneath the linebackers, and the slot receiver breaks outside on a shallow flat/out route while the fullback checks down on a short crossing route underneath. The primary read starts with the vertical flanker to hold the deep safety, then works to the drive route crossing underneath as the main target, with the flat route as the outlet against man coverage or blitz.
Identify the deep safety alignment before the snap: single high safety usually means Cover 3 or Cover 1, which tightens the window for the drive route and favors the flat route instead. Two deep safeties who stay wide and deep confirm Cover 4, which is exactly what this play is designed to exploit through the drive route sitting in the soft spot underneath. Watch the linebacker who has to cross the field to defend the drive route, since a fast flowing linebacker or a user controlled defender sitting in that lane can jump the throw if you telegraph it. If the defense shows a Cover 2 shell with corners sitting on the flat route, the drive route becomes your primary answer instead of the checkdown. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the vertical flanker route is a green light to test the deep shot instead of working the underneath progression.
Pre-snap, check the safety depth: if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards it confirms Cover 4 or Cover 2 and the drive route will have room to sit down in the window between the linebackers and safeties. Use the flat route as your hot route answer against man coverage by sending it to the boundary quickly, since it gives you a built-in man beater if the drive route gets picked up by an underneath defender. On third and medium, this play shines because the drive route settles right at the sticks after the vertical clears out the safety. Pair FL Drive with Curl Flat or Quick Outs in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the intermediate crossing action and quick underneath throws, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drops. Against zone heavy defenses, look to rob the drive route defender by throwing with anticipation as soon as the receiver clears the first level of linebackers.
