Quick Reference

Breakdown

Flanker Hook is a Pro Split Backs concept built around the flanker sitting down in a hook zone against the boundary while the tight end and backs work underneath in the intermediate range. It functions primarily as a zone beater, since the hook route settles into soft spots between linebackers and safeties, but it can also work against man coverage if you hot route the flanker into a quick separation move. The primary read progression starts with the flanker hook, then works to the tight end's shorter crossing or flat route, and finishes with the check down back out of the backfield for a safety valve.

Defensive Reads

Check linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow drops from Mike or Sam linebackers signal they are sitting on the hook route and you need to move to your second read immediately. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells pre-snap, as these are the coverages this play is designed to punish with the flanker settling in the soft hook zone. Watch for a user controlled linebacker spying the middle of the field, since a good user defender will jump the hook route the instant the quarterback's eyes lock onto it. Beware of Cover 2 Man or straight man blitz packages, since the hook route lacks the burst to separate against tight man coverage and the play becomes a liability against pressure. Key the safety rotation after the snap, because a late rotating safety over the top can close the passing window on the flanker hook and force you to check down to the backfield outlet.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a strafe to bait the safety and confirm whether you are looking at a two high shell or single high look before the snap.

Hot route the flanker to a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage, since the base hook route is designed to exploit zone drops rather than beat tight man coverage.

This play shines on second and medium or third and short to third and medium because the hook route settles in at a distance that consistently converts.

Pair this call with HB Draw or FB Belly out of the same Split Backs formation to keep linebackers honest and open up the hook window over the middle.

Sequence Flanker Hook with Curl Flat or Double Comeback later in a drive so defenders start jumping the short zones, then hit them with a play-action shot off the same formation.
