Outside Zone out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset Wk is a zone run play design that sends the offensive line laterally toward the play side to stretch the defense before working vertically. The diagram shows the HB taking a lateral step and pressing the edge with the full offensive line flowing in unison, while the receivers are not shown running routes, indicating this is a pure run concept meant to attack the perimeter. The primary read progression starts with the playside tackle and tight end edge blocks: the ball carrier presses the line of scrimmage, reads the first true edge defender, and decides whether to bounce outside, bend into the alley, or cut back based on how the defensive front flows.
Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front relative to the trips offset side, since defenses often overload the passing strength and leave the backside edge softer for cutback lanes. Watch linebacker depth: if they are sitting shallow and crashing hard toward the flow, user a linebacker to spy the cutback rather than letting the AI fit the gap. Outside zone is vulnerable to fast-flowing 3-4 fronts with disciplined edge defenders who stay square and force the ball back inside into pursuit. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with an extra run defender in the box (eight-man fronts) can shut this down quickly, so avoid this play if the defense shows a heavy pre-snap run blitz look. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker leverage: if they get skinny and squeeze the tackle's block, expect the ball carrier to bend it back inside rather than bounce.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle-to-tackle area.
Use the trips offset alignment to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the strength, which tells you whether the cutback lane will be there.
Manually control the HB and be patient behind the zone flow, pressing the line hard enough to hold backside pursuit before making your cut decision.
Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set so the defense cannot sit on outside zone flow, keeping linebackers honest on run fits.
Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want to establish tempo and set up PA Read or PA Shot later in the drive.
Against aggressive man-blitz looks, hot route the tight end into a quick chip release to help slow down edge pressure before he climbs to the second level.
