Defensive Reads
Key the flat defender on the trips side first, if he sinks with the stick route instead of jumping the flat, throw underneath to the flat receiver for a quick gain. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash down on the stick route open up the seam behind them for the backside vertical route. Identify press man coverage on the outside trips receiver before the snap, since this play struggles against tight man coverage without a hot route adjustment to the stick or out route. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone, as this play is vulnerable to a jumped stick route if the defense sits a linebacker or nickel corner in that exact throwing window. Recognize blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the running back staying in to block signals the offense expects pressure and the quick game routes become mandatory outlets.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two-high or one-high safety alignment, since the stick concept thrives against zone shells with defined curl-flat responsibilities.
If cornerbacks are pressed up on the trips side, hot route the outside receiver into a quick slant or speed out to counter man coverage before the stick route gets jumped.
Use this play on third and short to medium distance situations where the stick route sitting at the sticks creates an easy conversion window.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Sluggo Seam from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays start with similar trips alignment but attack downfield instead of the underneath stick window.
Watch the flat defender pre-snap, if a linebacker walks out toward the trips side, look to backside seam route immediately off the snap for a big play opportunity.
