PA Shot from Y Trips Offset Wk is a play-action shot play built to attack downfield off a run fake. The two outside receivers run vertical seams (the left one breaks outside toward the sideline before climbing, the right one runs a clean go route), while the inside slot runs a deep post/crosser that cuts hard across the middle of the field. The play-action fake to the HB holds the linebackers and the run blocking up front sells the play fake, and the primary read progression starts with the deep post breaking across the field, then works to the boundary go route if the post is covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the post route will have a wide throwing lane behind them. Key the single high safety, if he stays deep and centered the post is a tough throw and the outside go routes become the better options. Look for user linebackers dropping into a lurk position in the middle of the field, since that threatens the crossing post route directly. Identify Cover 3 rotation from the corners, if the boundary corner sinks deep the outside go route on that side will be covered top down. This play struggles against disciplined zone drops that do not bite on the play fake, so avoid calling it against defenses sitting in soft zone shells with no aggressive run blitz tendencies.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in manageable third down situations where defenses are more willing to bite on the run fake. Check pre-snap for single high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the post route has room to work behind linebackers who step up on the play-action. Hot route the outside go routes if you see Cover 2 shells, since the corners will have deep help and the post becomes a tighter window. Pair this play with Inside Zone or Outside Zone earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect the run action before dialing this up. Sequence this with Sluggo Seam or Four Verticals later in the game once the defense starts sitting on the play-action fake.
