HB Angle out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset Wk lines up with the HB releasing out of the backfield on an angle route, breaking outward and up the seam against a linebacker or nickel defender in man coverage. The lone TE runs a deep out breaking to the sideline while the backside X runs a vertical clear-out, and the trips side to the right shows a flat route and a dig/cross combo underneath a vertical from the slot. This is a man beater first and foremost, designed to isolate the HB on a linebacker in space with the angle route as the primary read, working to the TE's deep out as the secondary progression if the underneath defender squats on the running back.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with a linebacker or nickel matched up on the HB, since this play is built specifically to exploit that matchup in space. Watch safety alignment: a single high safety often signals man coverage underneath, which is exactly when the angle route thrives. If you see two deep safeties and linebackers sitting in zone drops, the HB angle route will be taken away by underneath defenders sinking into the throwing lane. Key on user controlled defenders lurking near the middle of the field, since a smart user player can jump the angle route if he anticipates the throw. Post-snap, watch for a linebacker blitz off the edge or up the middle, which forces the quarterback to speed up his read and can turn this into a quick checkdown rather than the designed angle route winning downfield.
Usage Tips
Target this play on third and short to third and medium when you diagnose man coverage pre-snap since the HB angle route is built to win one on one against linebackers and slower defenders. Check the linebacker depth before the snap: if he is playing tight to the line, the angle route will separate immediately off the release. Use motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm zone versus man, and if you see zone shells rotate to the deep out from the TE as your first read instead of forcing the angle route. Sequence this play alongside HB Slip Screen and HB Draw from the same set so defenses respect the run action and linebackers stay hesitant to jump the angle release. Pair it with PA Read or PA Shot on early downs to keep the defense guessing between play action shots and the quick HB angle beater. Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages unless you have a hot route ready to convert the HB into a quick outlet, since interior pressure can disrupt the timing before the angle route develops.
