HB Draw out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset Wk is a designed delay run that shows pass blocking at the snap before handing off to the HB, who sits behind the QB and lets the pocket set up before hitting the hole. The trips side (three receivers stacked wide) and the offset TE occupy the second and third level defenders, pulling linebackers into pass drops and clearing lanes for the interior blocking. This is a zone beater and blitz beater, designed to gash defenses that bring pressure or sit in zone drops reading the QB, with the primary read being the frontside gap for a cutback lane if the defense flows hard to the play fakes' direction.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker at the snap, if he drops into a zone read instead of stepping up on run flow the draw lane will be wide open. Watch for defensive ends and edge rushers selling upfield hard on what looks like a pass rush, that aggressive get off is exactly what this play exploits. If the defense shows a two high safety shell with cornerbacks playing off in zone, the linebackers are more likely to bite on pass keys and get caught out of position. Any defense running a spy technique or a designated hole player at the mike linebacker spot will sit and read this draw, shutting down the cutback lane before it develops. On third and long, watch for nickel or dime packages that remove run support defenders, this thins the box and creates bigger creases for the HB to work through.
Usage Tips
Call this play when the defense shows aggressive pre-snap blitz indicators like stacked box fronts or overloaded fronts since the draw action punishes defenders crashing upfield.
Use this in second and medium or third and short situations where the defense expects a quick pass game concept off the trips look.
Mix this into your play calling after running PA Read or PA Shot from the same formation so linebackers start keying pass first and bite on the initial drop step.
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they drop deep into zone coverage immediately you have a clean lane to press the hole and cut off the puller.
Avoid calling this against defenses that consistently spy the HB or use a linebacker in a hard flow read technique since that defender can sit and read the draw instantly.
