Comebacks is a trips-based dropback pass out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset Wk that floods one side of the field with three comeback-breaking routes and a red route from the backside receiver crossing the field. The three receivers from the trips side push vertically and snap back outside toward the sideline at depth, creating a high-low comeback stack that stretches zone defenders and gives the QB clear throwing lanes against off coverage. The lone backside receiver runs an out and up (comeback into a corner-esque break), acting as a change-of-pace man beater on the backside while the offensive line picks up in a standard pass protection look. Primary read progression starts outside in to the widest trips comeback, then works down to the middle and inner comebacks before checking the backside route.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the trips side; two-high shells with off corners are prime targets for the comeback breaks. Watch for man coverage indicators like a corner mirroring the widest trips receiver at the snap, which signals user coverage that can be beaten with a hard sell up the field before the comeback. Post-snap, key the flat or curl-to-flat defender in zone coverage; if he sits and reads the QB's eyes, expect a jumped route on the outside comeback. Look for a lurking linebacker or safety sinking into the middle passing lanes, since that defender can undercut the second and third comebacks in the trips stack. Beware disguised zone blitzes where the defense shows man press then bails into zone drops, since the comeback timing gets disrupted and the QB can be forced into a late, risky throw.
Attack this concept on second and long or third and medium when defenses sit in off man or zone shells expecting a longer developing route. Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing off man versus zone; off corners bail hard and get eaten alive by the comeback breaks, but press corners can jump the route before the receiver sits down. Use the outside comeback as your first read against Cover 3 since the flat defender has to widen for the trips bunch, opening the sideline window. Pair this play with Four Verticals and Sluggo Seam from the same set to keep defenses honest on vertical shots, then dial up Comebacks once you see safeties creeping toward the line of scrimmage. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or hitch if you see a blitz look, since the comeback and up route combo take too long to develop against pressure.
