Mtn HB Swing is a quick-hitting screen style pass out of Shotgun Y Trips Offset Wk that gets the HB out to the flat with a swing route off the backfield motion shown in the diagram. The lone route depicted shows the HB releasing out and up field toward the sideline, with the offensive line sliding to wall off pursuit and give the back a clean lane to work the perimeter. This is a zone beater designed to attack soft zone drops and outside linebackers who bite on the trips side, and the primary read progression is simply getting the ball to the HB in space as fast as possible before second level defenders can flow to the flat.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and spacing on the trips side, since shallow or blitzing backers will erase the swing lane immediately. Watch for a flat defender or corner sitting in the boundary, as that defender is the key to whether this route is open or covered. Post-snap, key any user controlled linebacker who flies out to the flat, since a disciplined user defender can jump this route for a big loss. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with a hard flat defender or aggressive man press across the formation, but it beats zone drops where linebackers retreat too deep or overcommit to the middle of the field. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since the swing can act as a built in outlet if protection breaks down.
Use this play on early downs or in obvious check down situations where you need a safe, low risk gain against zone heavy defenses. Before the snap identify if the defense is showing a soft zone shell with linebackers dropping into short zones, since that tells you the swing lane will stay open longer. Hot route the backside receiver on a quick slant or drag if you see man coverage across the board, since the swing alone will not beat aggressive man press. Pair this play with Inside Zone or HB Draw from the same set to keep defenses honest on run fits, then hit them with the swing when they start crashing down on run action. Sequence this after Sluggo Seam or Four Verticals so defenders respect the deep shots first, opening up easier YAC opportunities on the swing.
