The primary read progression starts with the flip motion man selling the screen action, then progresses to the downfield receiver who releases vertically once the defense commits, so patience on the pitch and trust in the double pass sequence is essential before looking for the second throw.
Watch for aggressive flat defenders and linebackers who crash hard on lateral or screen action, since that overcommitment is exactly what springs the double pass for a big gain. Identify man coverage versus zone shells pre-snap, since man corners with their back turned in coverage on the flip man are more likely to bite on the double pass fake.
