Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of Shotgun in the Wide Slot Right WK set that uses a split zone blocking scheme, with the offensive line flowing laterally to one side while the tight end or fullback cracks back across the formation to seal the backside edge. This split action gives the HB a true one cut and go north track once he identifies the crease, and it is designed to attack the frontside gaps of the defensive front while neutralizing backside pursuit from defensive ends and outside linebackers. The primary read progression for the HB is to press the frontside A gap, read the play side guard and center double team, and bounce outside if the backside cutback lane opens up from the split blocker's seal.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow linebackers who crash downhill immediately open cutback lanes for the backside bounce. Identify whether the defense is running a 3-4 or 4-3 front pre-snap since odd fronts with a true nose tackle can be tougher to displace on the frontside double team. Key the play side defensive end or outside linebacker to see if he stays home on the split blocker's crack action or if he crashes down and gets sealed, which tells you whether the edge is open. This run struggles against heavy blitz packages and nano blitz looks that shoot gap penetration before the double team can form, so recognize pre-snap blitz indicators like walked up linebackers over the guards. Aggressive user controlled defenders flowing hard to contain the frontside can be beaten by patience on the backside cutback if the split blocker locks up the edge defender.
Check defensive line alignment before the snap and look for one technique or shaded nose tackles since heavier fronts can clog the frontside A and B gaps and force a quicker bounce read. Use this play on early downs in normal or base personnel packages to stay balanced and keep defenses honest against your pass heavy calls in this set like Curls and Mtn Slot Cross. If you see light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, this run hits fast and does not need a hot route adjustment. Against stacked boxes with eight in the box, motion the slot receiver across pre-snap to check the defense and potentially get a numbers advantage or bail into a hot route audible.
