Breakdown

Inside Zone Split is a zone run play out of the Shotgun Wide Slot Right WK set in 11 personnel, built to create a clean vertical crease between the guards and center on a split zone blocking scheme. The TE works across the formation to cut the backside defensive end, freeing up the HB to press the hole and read the play side linebacker flow before deciding to bend the run backside or press it downhill. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression starts pre-snap with box count and front alignment, then moves post-snap to the frontside double team leverage and the backside cut block on the split flow defender.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders, since that alignment overloads the frontside gap and forces the HB to bounce with no clean lane Identify Mike linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage he can beat the block and blow up the play at the mesh point Key the backside defensive end on the snap, if he crashes down hard on the split block the cutback lane opens for the HB to bend it away from flow Look for user controlled defenders spying the A gap or B gap, aggressive users will shoot the gap early and need to be read with a quick cutback instead of a bang play Recognize nano blitz packages or edge pressure from the slot, since a fast diagonal blitz off the WK slot alignment can beat the split TE block before the HB even reaches the line

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to keep the numbers advantage

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to identify if the linebackers are stacked or spread, since this play thrives against light boxes and base fronts

Hot route the backside TE to stay in as an extra blocker versus heavy edge pressure looks if you are worried about the split block whiffing

Pair this with Mtn RPO QB Power or Mtn RPO QB Draw earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on run action, then hit them with Curls or Mtn Post Curls off the same shotgun look

Best called on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel instead of stacking the box
