RPO Glance Bubble out of the Shotgun Wide Slot Right WK set gives the quarterback a true run pass option read on the backside slot defender while the offensive line executes an inside zone blocking scheme to the play side. The glance route from the slot cuts inside quickly to attack a vacated middle void against man coverage, while the bubble screen to the outside receiver punishes light box counts and aggressive linebacker flow versus zone. This is a true RPO that also doubles as a run play, so the primary read progression is box count first (hand off if the count favors the run), then key the alley or curl to flat defender to decide between the glance and bubble.
Pre snap, identify the box count and safety depth since a light box or two high shell signals the run should hit, while a stacked box tells you to pull and throw. Post snap, key the play side linebacker or slot defender flow, if he steps up to fill the run gap, the bubble screen behind him is wide open. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat or lurking underneath, since this is the primary defender who can jump both the glance and the bubble if he reads the RPO quickly. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who stay home against the run tend to shut this down since they take away the bubble access point. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be exploited by the quick glance throw since there is no time for the box defender to recover once he commits upfield.
Count the box pre snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, lean run and let the inside zone hand off play out behind your blocking scheme.
If you see a walked up safety or extra defender crashing the box, pull the ball immediately and work the perimeter bubble screen for a numbers advantage.
Against man coverage shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 Man, throw the glance quickly since the slot defender will have his back turned in coverage on the outside receiver.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you are seeing a defender sitting directly on the bubble route to eliminate the leverage advantage.
Pair this play with Inside Zone Split and Counter Y in your call sheet so the defense has to respect the run fake, then hit them with the RPO Glance Bubble once they start crashing downhill.
