Mtn Z In is a motion based passing concept out of Shotgun Wide Slot Right WK that uses pre-snap motion to help identify man versus zone before the ball is even snapped. The Z receiver runs a hard in route across the middle to attack the intermediate zone, while the underneath and vertical routes stretch the defense to hold off cheating linebackers and clear the window for the in cut. This is primarily a man beater when the motion draws a defender across the formation, though the in route also settles into soft spots against zone drops, and the primary read progression starts with the Z on the in route before working to the secondary underneath option and then the checkdown if the middle is clogged.
Check the motion defender pre-snap, a defender that mirrors the Z across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you the in route should win at the top of its route stem. Identify the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties usually means the middle of the field is open for the in route to settle, while a single high safety means you need to be wary of a robber or lurk defender sitting underneath. Post-snap, watch linebacker depth and drop angles, a linebacker who sinks hard into the throwing lane of the in route is a sign of a Tampa 2 or match zone concept designed to take this route away. Look for blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge, since the in route develops with a slight delay and can be vulnerable to quick pressure if protection is not accounted for with a hot route or check. Man coverage with press corners at the line is the biggest green light for this play, while zone shells with a rat in the middle or aggressive Tampa 2 drops are what shut down the in route's throwing window.
Watch the motion defender pre-snap, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a strong indicator of man coverage and should lock onto the Z In route immediately at the snap.
If the defender stays put and the shell rotates to a two high or three deep look, treat this as a zone beater and let the Z In sit down in the soft spot rather than forcing it early.
Use hot routes to convert the underneath route to a shallow drag or spot route if you see a linebacker sitting directly in the throwing lane of the in route.
This play works best on second and medium to second and long, since the in route needs a full route stem to develop and beat off man leverage.
Pair Mtn Z In with Mtn Slot Cross or Curls in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both an in breaking crosser and route combos stacking the same area, then counter with HB Slip Screen or Mtn RPO QB Draw once linebackers start crashing the middle.
