Strong Flood is a classic Cover 3 beater built off the Shotgun Wide Slot Right WK set that stacks three receivers into a vertical flood to one side of the field, stretching the deep third defender high to low. The concept typically pairs a deep corner or go route with an intermediate out or comeback and a shallow flat route, giving the QB a clear progression from deep to underneath based on how the flat defender and deep third defender react. This is a straight dropback pass play, not an RPO or play-action, and the primary read starts with the deepest route to see if the safety rotates over before working down to the intermediate and flat options.
Pre-snap, identify the safety depth and leverage since a deep single high safety shaded to the flood side signals Cover 3 and confirms this play call is favorable. Post-snap, key the flat defender's reaction: if he sinks with the shallow route, the intermediate out or comeback should sit down in the window behind him for an easy completion. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the intermediate zone, since good players will jump the out or comeback route and bait the QB into a pick if the deep route isn't fully cleared first. Against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells, the deep route gets taken away by a squatting corner or safety, so the read should shift immediately to the shorter flat route instead of forcing the deep shot. Man coverage with no help over the top can be vulnerable to natural rub and pick actions inside the flood, but watch for a blitzing linebacker crashing off the edge that shortens the QB's clock before the flood routes fully develop.
Check pre-snap for single high or two high safety alignment since Strong Flood is designed to punish single high Cover 3 shells where the flat defender has to choose between the shallow route and the intermediate breaking route.
If you see two high safeties pre-snap, be ready to check to a different concept in the set like Curls or Mtn Slot Cross since flood concepts lose leverage against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with extra deep help.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick option or drag if the defense shows blitz, giving your QB an emergency outlet against pressure looks.
This play shines on 2nd and medium to long situations where defenses lean on zone coverage to prevent explosive plays, since the flood stretches those zone rules horizontally and vertically at the same time.
Sequence this play with HB Slip Screen or RPO Glance Bubble earlier in a drive so defenders start cheating toward the flat, opening up the deep corner route on Strong Flood later in the series.
