Read Option out of Shotgun Trio Offset Wk is a pure zone run play built around a read mesh between the QB and HB just behind the line, shown by the red and yellow arrows crossing near the mesh point. The three receivers stacked wide are uninvolved decoys that hold their cornerbacks vertically while the offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme up front to create a natural cutback lane. The primary read progression is the QB reading the play side defensive end at the mesh point: give to the HB on a give read, or pull and attack the edge on a keep read.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the play side defensive end's alignment and depth since he is the primary key the QB is reading at the mesh point. Watch for a linebacker cheating downhill early since that signals a run blitz that can blow up the mesh before the read develops. If the defensive end sits and stays disciplined, user him manually and force the QB into a difficult give read rather than an easy pull. Zone coverage shells with linebackers flowing hard to the play side edge shut this down by clogging the cutback lane the zone scheme is designed to create. Man coverage that leaves the box light is more vulnerable since fewer bodies are available to fill run gaps once the QB and HB commit to a direction.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check the box count and align your run away from extra defenders stacked to the play side edge since the QB read depends on a clean look at the defensive end. Use this play on early downs (1st and 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are likely to sit in base run fits rather than sub package looks. If the defense shows a heavy edge crash on film, hot route the play side WR into a quick out to hold the corner and open the alley for the keep read. Pair this with Outside Zone and Inside Zone from the same Trio Offset Wk set to keep the defense guessing on gap direction while using identical pre-snap window dressing. Sequence this after PA Flanker Spot or PA Niners Flood so linebackers start cheating toward pass drops, softening the edge defender's discipline on the option read.
