Breakdown

Middle Slant is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Trio Offset Wk that stresses the middle of the field with a true slant beater built in. The backside receiver runs a corner route up the numbers, the outermost receiver on the line works a wheel route from the flat, and the boundary receiver runs a vertical seam route up the numbers on the right side, while the slot defender runs a hard slant across the field as the primary man beater. This is a straight dropback pass play with no play-action or RPO elements, and the primary progression starts with the slant working against man coverage before working out to the corner and seam routes against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check corner alignment on the slot receiver since tight man coverage with no safety help over the top means the slant is going to win immediately. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because shallow zone drops from Tampa 2 or Cover 3 looks will jump the slant route and force the QB to the corner or seam. User controlled defenders sitting in the middle hook zone are the biggest threat to this concept since they can undercut the slant and bait a turnover. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep are more vulnerable since the underneath slant has room to work before the safeties can close. Blitz heavy looks with man coverage behind them get exposed quickly because the slant clears out fast and the QB can get the ball out before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Look for the slant first against any man coverage look since the route design gives the receiver an immediate inside leverage advantage on the slot defender.

Use this play on early downs or third and short to medium since the slant sits down quickly and gives the QB a rhythm throw.

If the defense shows a two high shell pre snap, work the seam and corner route combo on the right side since those routes stretch the zone vertically and horizontally.

Pair Middle Slant with RPO Peek Post or RPO Read Bubble in your play calling sequence to keep the defense honest on quick game reads before hitting them with the deeper corner shot.

Hot route the flat runner into a quick out if you see a nano blitz coming off the edge to give the QB a fast outlet away from pressure.
