Fake Screen Wheel is a play-action screen play out of Shotgun Trio Offset Wk that sells a quick HB screen to the flat before releasing the back on a wheel route up the sideline. The two inside receivers run vertical routes to stretch the defense downfield and occupy the deep coverage, while the fake screen action pulls up linebackers and underneath defenders, opening a lane for the wheeling back against man coverage or blown zone assignments. Primary read progression starts with the wheel route out of the backfield, then works to the two verticals if the wheel is covered or the defense sniffs out the screen fake.
Watch for linebackers cheating toward the line of scrimmage pre-snap, since aggressive run or screen defense keys leave the wheel route wide open against a slow flowing defender. If the defense shows man coverage with a linebacker or nickel corner over the back, expect them to bite on the screen fake, creating separation on the wheel route up the sideline. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with deep safeties sitting on the verticals can take away the downfield throws, forcing the check down to the wheel route as the only real answer. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the flat or spying the backfield, since that defender can jump the wheel route or the screen fake and blow up the entire concept. Fast disciplined linebackers who stay patient at the snap and do not bite on the screen fake will erase the wheel route's leverage, forcing you to rely on the verticals against tight man coverage.
Use this play when the defense has shown aggressive screen recognition or when linebackers are flying downhill on run fakes, since the wheel route exploits defenders biting on the fake screen action.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the verticals will be tightly covered, so lean on the wheel route matchup against a linebacker or nickel defender.
Hot route the far vertical into a deep out or comeback against zone shells like Cover 3 to give yourself an easier zone beater read if the wheel gets picked up.
Pair this call with HB Slip Screen or RPO Read WR Screen earlier in a series so the defense starts keying screen action, then hit them with the wheel for a big play once they overplay the flat.
Best used on second and medium or third and long situations where defenses are more likely to sit back in zone or blitz aggressively, since both tendencies open up the wheel route against a slower reacting defender.
