RPO Peek Post is a run pass option out of Trio Offset Wk that pairs an inside zone run with a post route peek concept attacking the middle of the field. The quarterback reads the play side linebacker or the second level defender who steps up to fill the run lane, pulling the ball to hit the post if that defender bites on the run action. This is a true RPO that punishes linebacker overcommitment and works as both a light box run beater and a zone beater since the peek route sits behind linebackers who flow downhill. Primary progression is run key first: if the alley defender crashes the run fit, pull and throw the post immediately, otherwise hand it off for a clean zone run.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker depth immediately after the snap, if he steps up into the run lane the post window opens behind him and the quarterback should pull it. User your Mike linebacker or a lurking safety to sit in the passing lane and take away the post peek without abandoning your run fit responsibility. Against man coverage shells this play is vulnerable if the defense has a safety spying the peek route from depth, so disguising a robber look post snap can bait a bad throw. Cover 3 with aggressive run fits is the shell this play punishes hardest since the flowing linebackers vacate the post lane. To shut this down as the defense, keep your second level defenders reading run first without fully committing hips and stay square until the ball is confirmed, this denies the easy peek throw and forces the offense to live off the zone run alone.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if there are six or fewer defenders in the box this play is designed to make you right no matter what the defense does. Use your pre-snap motion sparingly here since the RPO read depends on linebacker leverage staying honest at the snap, too much shift can tip your hand or force a rotation that muddies the read key. If the defense shows two deep safeties with linebackers sitting short, favor the run since the post peek window will be tight against a deep half shell. Combine this call with Inside Zone and Outside Zone earlier in a series so the defense keys run fits and starts crashing linebackers, then punish that aggression with this RPO for an explosive gain. On third and short or second and manageable, this is a low risk call since the run action alone usually gets positive yardage even if you never pull the trigger on the post.
