This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the flood to stretch the deep third defender and the underneath zone defenders horizontally, and the primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, works down to the crossing route sitting in the void, and checks down to the flat route as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment before the snap since that signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this flood concept is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender after the snap, if he sinks too deep with the crossing route the flat route from the backfield will be wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Key on the deep third defender to the flood side, if he stays flat footed reading the quarterback the corner route can be thrown over the top for a chunk gain. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where two defenders can split the flood routes, so expect quick disruption if the safety rotates late to double the corner route. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow crossing route lane can jump the middle read, so quarterbacks need to feel that spy and check to the flat route instead of forcing the crosser.

Use play action on early downs like first and ten or second and short so linebackers bite on the run fake and open the crossing route window. Hot route the backfield flat route into a wheel if you see man coverage on the running back to create an explosive big play threat against linebackers.
