PA Flanker Spot runs a play-action fake to the backfield before working a Spot concept to the closed side (hitch, corner, and flat/pivot routes underneath) while a single receiver runs a deep vertical away from the concept, holding backside safety help. The offensive line shows run blocking on the play fake to freeze linebackers before dropping into pass protection. This is a classic Cover 3 beater: the corner route occupies the deep third defender while the underneath spot combo (hitch and flat) settles into the vacated zones created by the play-action freeze. Primary read progression starts with the corner route against a hard-rolling flat defender, then works down to the hitch, and finally to the flat/pivot route as the checkdown against a fast-closing underneath defense.
Defensive Reads
Read the middle linebacker and safety depth immediately after the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the underneath spot routes will be wide open. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat zone, an aggressive user lurk can jump the flat route and turn it into a turnover. Key the cornerback over the corner route, if he sinks deep and stays outside leverage this play stalls out and the quarterback should progress down to the hitch or flat quickly. Look for zone blitz packages disguised pre-snap, this play struggles against pressure that gets home before the play-action fake fully develops since the protection is designed for standard four-man rushes. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties take away the corner route's main advantage, forcing the quarterback to live underneath and settle for shorter completions.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a look to the deep vertical side to bait the safety before the snap, since selling the run fake is critical to opening up the underneath spot window.
Identify Cover 3 shells by checking for a single high safety and off corners before the snap, this play is designed to attack that exact structure.
If the defense shows a two-high safety look, be ready to hot route the flat route into a quicker option or check to a different play in the set like Curl Flat, since the corner route loses its main advantage against Cover 4 or Cover 2.
Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) to keep the play-action threat credible, then pair it later in a drive with HB Draw or Read Option out of the same formation to keep linebackers hesitant on the snap.
Sequence this play after a few live run calls like Inside Zone or Outside Zone from Trio Offset Wk so the fake actually holds linebackers and opens passing lanes underneath.
