The backfield shows a play-action fake to the HB while the offset TE releases on a corner route up the sideline, with the underneath spot combo (hitch, quick out, and shallow drag) working the flat and short zones on the trips side. On the backside, the single WR runs a deep post that stretches the field vertically. Primary read progression starts with the flat and drag combo underneath, then works to the corner route, with the backside post as a shot play if the safety bites on the play-action.

Defensive Reads

Read the strong safety and slot corner pre-snap to see if they are sitting on the underneath spot combo or cheating toward the trips side. Watch for Cover 3 shells with a single high safety, since the corner route from the TE and the backside post are both designed to exploit the deep third seams. Identify blitz packages by checking the box count. If the defense brings extra pressure, the play-action fake can freeze linebackers just long enough to complete the quick spot route underneath. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flying downhill on the run fake, since that opens up the drag or flat route immediately behind them. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 looks where the corner route runs into help over the top, so be ready to check down to the underneath spot routes instead of forcing the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs after establishing HB runs from this same Trio Offset Wk set so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and safeties.

Check the flat defender pre-snap. If a corner or linebacker is sitting hard on the underneath spot route, hot route the drag to a deeper crosser or bail to the corner route read.

Against Cover 3, target the corner route out of the TE since it settles into the natural void behind the curl defender and in front of the deep third safety.

If the safety shows single high pre-snap and bites on the run fake, take a shot on the backside post immediately off the play-action fake.

Pair this with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a series to sell the run action, then call PA Flanker Spot to punish linebackers stepping up on run reads.
