Inside Zone out of Trio Offset Wk (Shotgun, 11 personnel) hands the ball off with the running back attacking downhill through the A or B gap based on the zone blocking flow of the offensive line. The three receivers stacked wide run off coverage vertically to hold cornerbacks and safeties, clearing the box for the interior run lane rather than serving as live progression reads. This is a straightforward zone run play designed to attack light boxes and gap-shooting linebackers, with the primary read being the running back's one-cut decision off the line's zone steps rather than a route progression.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are creeping up or showing blitz the zone run can get gap-shot before the line sets its blocks. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells pre-snap, single-high often means the extra defender is in the box and this play will face more resistance. Post-snap, track whether the defensive line is two-gapping or shooting gaps, since aggressive gap-shooters can blow up zone blocking if the RB does not press the hole correctly. User-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill from a linebacker spot are the biggest threat, look for manual crashes into the A gap right after the snap. This play struggles against stacked run fronts and Cover 0 blitz packages, but it exploits nickel or dime defenses that lighten the box to defend the pass.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and count the box, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this play has a clean lane waiting.
Use motion or a quick glance at safety depth to confirm you are not walking into an eight-man box, since Inside Zone dies against heavy run support looks.
Pair this with PA Niners Flood or PA Flanker Spot from the same set so defenses cannot sit on run keys once you have shown Inside Zone a few times.
On early downs (first and ten, second and short) this is a great base run to establish tempo, but avoid calling it into predictable short yardage since defenses will stack the box.
If the defense shows blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing your TE to a quick out or check into RPO Read Bubble from the same formation to punish overaggressive linebackers.
