Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trio Offset Wk is a straightforward zone run play with the HB aligned offset to the backfield and three receivers stacked to the same side, giving the offense a run-heavy look with numbers to the play side. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working combo blocks at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers, while the HB reads the play side hole and presses the line before making a cut based on the flow of the defensive front. This is a pure run play with no pass option attached, so the primary read progression belongs to the HB, who keys the first down lineman for the natural cutback lane and reacts to the linebacker fits rather than following a predetermined gap.

Defensive Reads

Check linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow and stacked tight to the box signal a run blitz or gap plug that can slow this play down. Watch for safety rotation into the box. An eighth defender crashing down from a single high safety look is the biggest threat to inside zone and should trigger a check to a play-action or RPO instead. Identify odd fronts with a nose tackle head up on the center, since this alignment can clog the primary running lane and force an immediate cutback read. Post snap, track user-controlled defenders flowing hard to one gap, since disciplined zone blocking will often create a cutback lane away from the initial flow. Beware of edge defenders crashing down hard off the snap on stunts or contain blitzes, since this can collapse the play side rushing lane before the HB can press the hole.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when you want to stay ahead of the chains without tipping run through personnel or formation tendencies.

Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider a hot route audible or motion to bring an extra blocker, or bail into a different play in the set.

Pair this with RPO Read Bubble or RPO Peek Post from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the inside zone run action and the quick pass options off similar backfield action, forcing linebackers to hesitate.

Against aggressive fronts that crash hard to stop the initial gap, manually control the HB after the handoff and look for the cutback lane opened by overpursuing linebackers or edge defenders.

Mix in HB Draw and Outside Zone from this same set to keep defenders guessing on run direction while using an identical presnap picture.
