Play diagram for RPO Alert HB Zone from Shotgun Flex Y Off in Madden 27

Not in any team playbook.

Breakdown

RPO Alert HB Zone is an inside zone run paired with a pre-snap alert read tagged to the backside receiver on a deep post breaking across the middle of the field. The offensive line blocks inside zone up front while the HB reads the alert defender (typically the read is on the overhang or slot defender) to decide between the give and the throw. On the play side flank, a receiver runs a quick out to hold the corner, while the alert route stretches vertically to attack any safety or linebacker who steps up to fill against the run. This is a true RPO built to punish light boxes and aggressive downhill linebackers, giving the quarterback a run-or-pass decision based entirely on second level defender leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the second level defenders at the snap, if the linebackers flow hard toward the line of scrimmage the QB will pull and throw the alert post immediately. Man coverage on the outside receiver with the corner running with the out route usually signals a favorable throw window over the top if the safety bites on run action. A single high safety who steps up into the box on the snap is the green light for the QB, so user controlled safeties need to stay disciplined and read run pass options before committing. Zone coverage shells with a deep half player sitting over the alert route can undercut the throw, forcing the offense into the handoff against a stacked box. Blitzes that send extra defenders through the A or B gap can disrupt the zone blocking scheme up front, so watch for delayed linebacker blitzes disguised as base fronts before the snap.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and if you see six or fewer defenders in the box, lean toward handing it off on inside zone.

If a linebacker or safety crashes down hard at the snap, pull the ball and throw the alert route behind them for an explosive gain.

Use the quick out route as a built in checkdown against man coverage when the safety plays the post route deep, it keeps the RPO alive versus tight man alignments.

Mix this play with Inside Zone and Read Option from the same set so the defense cannot key on formation tendencies, this keeps linebacker run fits honest.

Call this on early downs in run heavy personnel to bait aggressive defenses, then hit them with the alert throw once they start selling hard on the run fake.
