This WR Screen out of Shotgun Empty Quads shows the outside receiver on the numbers running a quick screen route toward the sideline while the slot receiver just inside him releases and turns upfield to block the first defender he sees. It is a classic screen play designed to punish aggressive man coverage and overzealous pass rushes by getting the ball out fast to a receiver with blockers in space. The primary read is immediate: the QB catches and throws hot to the screen receiver at the snap, relying on the blocking receiver to spring him for extra yardage.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the slot corner or nickel defender playing off coverage, that soft cushion is exactly what this screen exploits. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with zone corners sitting deep, this play struggles since the underneath defenders can read and rally. Man coverage with aggressive jam technique gets beaten badly here because the blocker can seal the man defender away from the ball. Look for a user-controlled defender spying or lurking near the line of scrimmage, a smart human opponent will sit on this screen and blow it up for a loss. Blitzes off the edge away from the screen side actually help this play since it removes a defender from the alley, but blitzes into the screen side can be a fatal counter.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see off man coverage or press corners crashing hard upfield since it turns their aggression against them.
Use it as a change of pace after running Four Verticals or Cross Z Post to slow down blitz-happy defenses that are pinning their ears back.
Throw the screen quickly, do not hold the ball, this play lives and dies on timing and the blocker getting in front before the defense reacts.
Great on 2nd or 3rd and short to medium since it is a low risk, high floor play that keeps the offense on schedule.
Pair with QB Draw or RPO Alert QB Draw in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders honest about crashing down too fast on outside receivers.
