RPO Alert QB Draw out of Shotgun Empty Quads shows the QB draw as the base run concept with an RPO alert tag built in on the boundary. The diagram shows the isolated X receiver running a vertical route on the backside while the tight slot receiver runs a quick out and up, giving the QB a bail out throw if the defense crashes down on the draw. Because it is empty backfield, the entire offensive line and the QB himself are the run action, so the primary read is pre-snap: identify light boxes or overaggressive linebacker flow to hand the ball off, and if the defense sells out against the run, pull the RPO alert to the X receiver's vertical shot down the sideline.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and count defenders in the box since empty formations often bait defenses into light fronts that this draw wants to exploit. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel defender leverage on the RPO alert side, if they are playing outside shade with no help over the top the vertical alert throw is live. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill toward the draw action the QB should already be reading the alert route instead of tucking the ball. Man coverage with no safety help over the vertical alert receiver is the biggest bust risk for the defense, while a two high shell with disciplined linebackers sitting in gap control shuts down both the draw and the RPO read. Watch for a delayed blitz or spy on the QB, since disguised pressure up the middle can blow up the draw before the mesh point develops, forcing an immediate alert throw with no time to climb the pocket.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs against defenses that show single high safety or run blitz looks, since the empty backfield removes an extra blocker but also removes a lead run blocker, so numbers in the box matter most. Check the flat and curl defenders before the snap; if the slot corner or nickel is sitting low and inside, pull the RPO alert quickly to the vertical shot instead of forcing the draw into a stacked box. Pair this play with QB Blast and QB Draw from the same set so linebackers start keying run fits, then hit the RPO alert vertical or Four Verticals concept once they start crashing down on every snap. Hot route the tight slot receiver into a deeper crossing route if you see the defense playing soft zone shells, since the shallow out and up will get eaten by underneath zone defenders. Best used on second and short or first and ten when defenses are still respecting balanced play calling and have not yet adjusted to your run heavy tendencies out of empty.
