Four Verticals out of Shotgun Empty Quads sends all four receivers vertical up the field while the QB works from an empty backfield with no run support. The X receiver runs a shallow crosser that clears underneath, the slot receiver breaks outside on a corner route, and the two outside receivers stem straight up the seams and boundary for a true four-man vertical stretch. This is a classic zone beater designed to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep zones, with the primary read progressing from the inside seam to the corner breaking route and finally to the crosser underneath if the deep windows are covered.
Defensive Reads
Identify two deep safeties pre-snap as your green light for Cover 2, since the seam routes will split the difference between the flat defender and the deep half safety. A single high safety pre-snap signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, so key on the middle linebacker's depth to see if he can wall off the inside seam or if he bails late leaving it open. Watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in the deep middle as a lurk threat, since that defender can rob the seam or the corner route if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Cover 4 or quarters shells with matched-up corners on the outside verticals will shut this play down unless the crosser comes open underneath. Be alert for late-showing blitzes off the edge since the empty formation gives no protection help outside of the offensive line, and hot the crosser into a quick outlet if pressure arrives before the seams break open.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, two high safeties tell you Cover 2 is live and the seams will be your first read against the natural hole between the corner and safety. Against Cover 3 look for the middle of the field closed shell and target the seam or corner route away from the single high safety since one defender cannot cover three deep-breaking routes. Use hot routes to convert the shallow crosser into a shorter option against Cover 1 or Cover 0 man looks if you see press alignment across the board. This play works best on obvious passing downs like second or third and long when defenses are more willing to sit in soft zone shells. Pair it with WR Screen or RPO Alert QB Draw earlier in a series to bait linebackers into cheating up, then come back to Four Verticals to expose the vacated deep middle.
