Breakdown

QB Draw out of Shotgun Empty Quads sends four receivers wide (three bunched to the right, one isolated left) with no running back in the backfield, forcing the defense to declare coverage before the snap. The offensive line sets up pass protection for a beat before opening a lane for the quarterback to run through the middle on a delayed handoff to himself. This is a designed QB run built to punish aggressive pass rush upfield and light boxes vacated by an empty backfield look, and the primary read progression is simply feeling the interior gap that opens as the defensive line rushes past the mesh point.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles crashing hard upfield off the snap, that aggression is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 1 with linebackers reading pass first due to the four wide receiver look, the draw lane will stay open longer. User-controlled defenders sitting in a spy or lurk technique near the middle of the field are the biggest threat to blow this play up before it develops. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge actually help the offense here, since the interior gap widens as those defenders rush past the pocket. A disciplined defensive line that reads run keys and holds their gaps, especially defensive tackles staying square instead of rushing upfield, will shut this play down quickly.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs after you have shown pass out of Empty Quads a few times so the defense bites on the wide receiver alignment instead of respecting the run.

Check the defensive line width pre-snap, if both tackles are shading wide to rush off the edge, the interior lane will be wide open for the draw.

Pair this with Four Verticals or WR Screen from the same set so defenders keying on Empty Quads personnel have to respect both the pass and the run threat equally.

Avoid calling QB Draw against defenses sitting in a two-deep shell with linebackers stacked tight to the line, since that alignment keeps the middle clogged.

Use motion or a hard cadence before the snap to bait linebackers into blitzing, which opens up more room for the delayed run once they commit upfield.
